What Is Enteral Feeding Support Under the NDIS?

Enteral feeding support is a designated High Intensity Daily Personal Activity under NDIS Practice Standards Module 1. It applies to participants who receive nutrition via a gastrostomy tube (PEG or PEJ) or nasogastric tube (NG tube) and require support with tube feeding management in the community.

• PEG tube site care — stoma site management, infection prevention, dressing changes
• PEJ and NG tube management — tube placement verification, feed administration, equipment care
• Complication recognition and response — tube displacement, aspiration risk, infection, bloating, feed intolerance
• Equipment management — feed pumps, giving sets, syringes, extension sets
• Support worker training and competency assessment — documented per worker per participant, with annual renewal
• Liaison with treating dietitian — ensuring NDIS care plan aligns with dietitian-prescribed feed type and volume

Key Risks in Community Enteral Feeding

The highest clinical risks in community enteral feeding are:

• Aspiration — feed entering the airway, particularly in participants with co-existing dysphagia or reduced consciousness
• Tube displacement or dislodgement — a displaced PEG tube must not be used; urgent RN or ED review required
• Stoma site infection — redness, discharge, pain, or granulation tissue require RN assessment
• Feed intolerance — vomiting, bloating, diarrhoea, or reflux require care plan review
